GILLS ROCK, Wis. _ The acrid smell of burning oil signaled that the fish boil was ready.
"Magic Boy Scout water _ No. 1 fuel oil," boilmaster Kurt Knudson explained as he doused the wood fire under the iron kettle with oil, turning it into a smoking inferno.
What began as an economical way to feed hungry lumberjacks and fishermen has evolved into a Door County tradition. At least nine county restaurants feature nightly boils during the summer, with the Viking Grill in Ellison Bay laying claim to the longest continuously operating boil _ more than 40 years.
