AKRON, Ohio _ Dr. Laura Phipps rolls down the windows and pinches her legs to keep from falling asleep at the wheel after the occasional 34-hour, sleepless shift at Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron.

Her husband, Bill, a surgery resident at a Youngstown, Ohio, hospital, has fallen asleep at a stop sign after an exhausting 36-hour shift.

``You learn how to function adequately being under sleep deprivation,'' said Phipps, who's a third-year pediatric resident. ``But I think how much you absorb goes down. You're kind of just there as a body, unfortunately.''
