Jul. 30--The Chicago Tribune, considered early on as a dark horse in the race to buy Chicago magazine, is close to finalizing an agreement to buy the city magazine, sources close to the deal said Monday.

Neither the newspaper nor Primedia, the New York-based owner of the magazine, would comment Monday on specifics of the discussions. But sources said that an announcement could come as early as Wednesday.

"The bidding process has been very active," a Primedia spokesman said. "There is nothing to announce."
