It's no surprise that the Republican Party took less than a week to find someone, anyone, to run against Barack Obama, the Illinois state senator who has become a rising star in the Democratic Party.
What is surpising is who the Illinois GOP offered the unenviable assignment to run against Obama in the upcoming U.S. Senate race. That choice would be none other than perennial political loser Alan Keyes.
At last count, Keyes, the ultraconservative television talk show host, lost two bids for a U.S. Senate seat in Maryland in 1988 and 1992 and another two runs for the U.S. presidency in 1996 and 2000.
