Sources of symbol requirements Many readers will be familiar with the harmonised standard, EN 980: 2003 "Graphical symbols for use in the labelling of medical devices," which specifies graphical symbols that can be used to support the relevant essential requirements of the Medical Device Directive (93/42/EEC). There is a similar international standard, ISO 15223: 2000 "Medical devices, Symbols to be used with medical device labels, labelling and information to be supplied," as well as other, more specific, standards including symbols for certain product groups.
