Flat is in these days--for TV screens as well as stomachs.
The newest trend among television set manufacturers is equipping receivers with cathode ray tubes (CRTs) that have significantly flatter viewing surfaces. "The main advantage of a flatter screen is less picture distortion," explains David Staelin, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In addition, flatter screens can be viewed from almost anywhere in the room, and the picture appears to be more true-to-life: "We're used to looking at photos or paintings, so a flat picture is more natural," says Jerry Surprise, television product manager for Panasonic.
