BP remains leader in total assets.(Annual Reports)(petroleum industry statistics)

THE 2003 RANKING OF MAJOR OIL companies shows that BP is still in first place with ExxonMobil narrowing the gap by half. In 2002, ExxonMobil trailed behind BP by $6.4 billion. The 2003 rankings indicate that ExxonMobil is striving to regain its No. 1 place by decreasing the gap in total assets to $3.2 billion.

While Shell remains at number three in total assets, it is clear that any past threat was eliminated in 2003 for the No. 2 spot. In 2002, ExxonMobil and Shell were in very close competition for number two in total assets, but 2003 shows the gap between the two companies increasing.
