Jun. 11--SUNNYVALE, Calif.--Until last fall, Sunnyvale-based Cepheid was plodding along, slowly building a market for its new instruments that detect DNA.
Then the anthrax attacks hit. Scrambling to contain the problem and solve the mystery behind the attacks, the Centers for Disease Control and state public health laboratories turned to a machine from Cepheid called the Smart Cycler to help analyze suspect samples. Government orders accelerated. In the fourth quarter of 2001, the company sold 117 Smart Cyclers compared with 76 in the previous quarter, many to the CDC and public labs.
