Salon activism.(Mercury Rising)

A COALITION OF ENVIRONMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS led by Greenpeace has launched a mass effort to get women out to their local hair salon. But the purpose is not to get their hair done. The goal is to sample hair in order to document a growing environmental danger.

The "Mercury Hair Sampling Project" aims to gather data on mercury poisoning in women. The inaugural event, held at a Philadelphia salon just before Mother's Day, was a response to new clean-air regulations issued by the Bush administration last February which environmentalists warn will result in increased risk to the public.
