SOME JEWISH COMMUNITIES mark each July Fourth by reading Deuteronomy 17:14-20 from the Torah, accompanied by, as the prophetic reading, the Declaration of Independence.

This blending of an ancient text with a core document of United States history may seem odd at first, but in fact, the two cohere remarkably.
