BURBANK, Calif. _ A large red Indian head is emblazoned on a wall outside Burroughs High School here. In a debate playing out on hundreds of college and prep campuses around the nation, the mascot is revered by some as a symbol of the school's spirit and reviled by others as racist.
A bill working its way through the California legislature would force Burroughs and nearly 200 other public schools across the state to rename their sports teams, replace their mascots and remove Indian heads, tomahawks and other icons of Native Americans.
