CHICAGO _ Gary Matthews made his reputation as leader who inspired teammates to reach their potential. Now Matthews is ready to apply those skills to being a big-league manager.
"That's God-given, to be able to make other players play better. And that's not saying that I was the best player on the team, because I was not," said Matthews, 51, now the Milwaukee Brewers' batting coach. "Did I have the best stats? I did not. But was I able to motivate? I did that all my life."
That approach led Pete Rose to dub his teammate Matthews "Sarge" when the Phillies won the World Series title in 1983.
