ORLANDO, Fla. _ In an approach that could transform cardiac surgery for clogged arteries, more surgeons are operating on beating hearts instead of stopping them and putting patients on heart-lung machines.
Considered radical only a few years ago, such surgeries are gaining support from doctors amid evidence that they lead to fewer chest infections, less need for blood transfusions and shorter hospital stays. Doctors also think the procedure might reduce memory loss and other neurological complications linked to the heart-lung machine.
