Not to engage in yellow journalism, but tonight's blue moon may be a bit of a white lie.

For the past 58 years, the definition of a blue moon has come to mean a second full moon in the same month.

But traditionalists say that definition came about because of a reporting error. They continue to follow a more arcane - and complicated - definition.

"A blue moon is not really what people think it is," said Bob Moon, owner of the Barrington jewelry shop Once in a Blue Moon. "Once in a while, or once in a blue moon, I explain it to customers."
