May 18--Bob Laniewski clutched his swatch of history like a rolled-up map. In his hands rested a frayed, bright yellow sheet from the final reel of paper ever produced at International Paper Co.'s Erie mill.
Piece by piece, Laniewski glumly tore off strips of that paper for co-workers, reciting its vital statistics as if he were reading an obituary notice.
Minutes earlier, at 9:42 a.m., a heavy stock of "ultra lemon, bright hue" fine paper came off of machine No. 2 at the former Hammermill Paper plant on East Lake Road.
