May 18--People were skeptical when a winery went up at the site of a former gas station at the corner of Calumet Avenue and 119th Street in Hammond.
But since its start as a small boutique winery, Lake Michigan Winery now bottles nearly 10,000 gallons per year.
Lake Michigan Winery uses a family approach to picking, vinting, aging and bottling the wine -- although it is improved by modern equipment. The cellar master and winemaker begins the process by destemming the fruit, then putting it through the crushing press.
