May 18--TALLAHASSEE, Fla.--A Tallahassee company is set to get $1 million in the new state budget to study turning Leon County garbage into fuel.
Environmental Solutions and Technology Inc. will have a year to show that its "destructive distillation" method for baking trash into gas and rock could be used across the state by communities looking for alternative sources of electricity and faced with shrinking landfill space.
"It's a pilot project for us to show our technology to the state," said Tom DiGiacomo, vice president for the company, which also has an office in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
