May 6--Adobe dominates the professional image-editing software market with Photoshop, but one step down, in what I call the advanced amateur category, its old and tired Photoshop LE was getting pummeled by Jasc Software's Paint Shop Pro throughout the 1990s.

Paint Shop Pro offered about 80 percent of Photoshop's features for one-sixth the price, which made it very appealing to nonprofessionals who don't use all of Photoshop's features.

So, last year Adobe introduced Adobe Photoshop Elements to compete with Paint Shop Pro (and an equally powerful Ulead PhotoImpact 7) at about $90.
