May 9--The devastating fire at a local marina last week has heightened awareness of the many threats to boats.
A fire on a luxury boat at Colonial Beach Yacht Center spread and rapidly devoured about 60 other vessels last week. It is the biggest marina on the Potomac River, with 162 slips.
State police investigators determined that gas fumes in the boat's bilge started the fire.
While incidents that destructive are a rarity, there are measures boat owners can take to prepare for the unexpected.
