May 10--TORONTO--Berating its government for being "asleep at the wheel" while the country has lost nearly 13,000 auto jobs, the Canadian Auto Workers union launched a campaign Thursday to create lucrative incentives for automakers and suppliers that invest in Canada -- or a costly sales tax for those that don't.
The proposal seeks to halt a decade-long trend of automakers building new plants in the southern United States or Mexico, while hourly auto-union employment in the United States and Canada shrinks.
