May 10--Even for a small community bank, taking over a rival means taking on some risk.
There is always the chance of confusing workers and running into nightmarish computer glitches. What if customers can't access their accounts? What if employees are inundated with questions they can't answer?
It all translates into the danger of losing some of the same business the bank set out to win.
Washington Trust Bancorp, as it completes an acquisition that expands its branches for the first time into central Rhode Island, adopted some extensive measures for such a conversion.
