May 2--Sun Microsystems said Wednesday that Ed Zander, the fast-talking Brooklyn native who serves as No. 2 to Chief Executive Scott McNealy, will retire July 1, adding to the recent exodus of high-level executives from the Santa Clara server maker.
The departure of Zander, 55, leaves McNealy alone at the top of Sun as the economic recession and cheaper products from competitors decimate the company's sales.
In his role as president and chief operating officer, Zander, 55, was seen as the company's premier salesman -- an energetic but pragmatic leader who countered some of McNealy's wisecracking bluster and visionary ...
