May 29--At least 30 workers who returned to their jobs after a strike at a Fontana factory that makes wood roof trusses were fired a few days later, and their union is alleging retribution.

A spokesman for the Fontana factory, Universal Truss Inc., said between 30 and 40 employees were dismissed for alleged assaults and vandalism during the picketing and not in retaliation for striking.

"There isn't any retribution," said Matt Missad, corporate secretary of Universal Forest Products, the Grand Rapids, Mich., corporate parent of Universal Truss. "If that was the case, all of them would have been fired."
