SANTA ANA, Calif. _ Some of it can be traced to the kitchen: The coffee maker on the counter. The tea pot on the stove. The anti-bacterial soap on the sink.

But most of it can be traced to the intimacies of the family powder room: The shower stall lined with fragrant shampoos and skin moisturizers. The medicine chest ajumble with Tylenol, birth control pills, heart medications.

Ultimately, the piece de resistance of indoor plumbing _ the porcelain toilet, which conveys the common chemicals coursing through the human body to sewers, which eventually release them to streams and rivers in torrents of treated effluent.
