Parents get involved on behalf of schools; Concerned about budget cuts that affect class sizes and program offerings, districts are forming legislative action committees.(WEST)

For Kristen Giovanis, the frustration with public school budget cuts is deeply personal.

Her oldest child has attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and could not read when he entered first grade at Sunset Hill Elementary in Wayzata. When he left first grade, however, he was reading at the third- or fourth-grade level - thanks to a program called Reading Recovery.

"Then I found out that program was considered for the chopping block," said Giovanis, a lawyer, business owner and mother of three who lives in Plymouth. So she became involved in Wayzata's legislative action committee last year.
