KENT, Ohio _ Approaching from the south, the first sign mentioning the college is on a billboard: "We Are Kent State." It is an advertisement to buy athletic tickets. Several turns later, another sign appears, a much smaller one, pointing the way to the May 4 Memorial.
The two signs may not appear to have much to do with each other. Except that at Kent State University, almost every issue eventually circles back to the historic events of May 4, 1970, when National Guardsmen shot and killed four Kent State students and wounded nine others.
