PALM SPRINGS, Calif. _ Before Cannes, before Acapulco, before Sun Valley, Sundance and Jackson Hole, practically before Malibu, there was Palm Springs.
The desert resort two hours east of downtown Los Angeles has been Hollywood's escape valve for as long as theaters have unspooled celluloid.
When movie heartthrob Robert Mitchum left jail in 1948 after serving a short sentence for marijuana possession, a crush of reporters asked what life was like inside the joint.
"It's just like Palm Springs without the riffraff," Mitchum said with a smirk.
