SAN DIEGO _ It is unfortunate but true that San Diego State's most famous basketball player was a baseball player. And when yet another Aztecs coach fell out of the chair in the spring of `99, Tony Gwynn volunteered.

The Aztecs had done worse. Since they went Division I in 1969-70, only one coach, Tim Vezie, got away with a winning record. Until they went 14-14 in `01, they had suffered 15 consecutive losing seasons.
