Until 1994, when scientists using the Hubble Space Telescope confirmed the existence of black holes, it was commonly believed that the darkest thing in the universe was an impenetrable pint of stout. Jet black except for its creamy head, Guinness has been synonymous with stout for nearly two centuries.
The Dublin brewing giant has spent heavily to keep it that way, on advertising as well as new containers for its "pub draught" brew. The mainstreaming of Guinness has succeeded in Chicago to the point that only Miller Lite has more taps in bars, says sales representative Brad Bailey.
