PITTSBURGH _ THERE ARE NCAA Tournament underdogs. Then there are NCAA Tournament underdogs from the Ivy League, the type that pose a special form of danger for top dogs, the type that Cal will face on Friday in a first-round game against Penn.
It doesn't matter that Penn has won 10 games in row. Or that it has been in the NCAAs 19 times, counting this year. Or that it upset sixth-seeded Nebraska in 1994.
Or that it beat No. 1-ranked North Carolina and reached the Final Four in 1979, losing to Magic Johnson and eventual champion Michigan State in the semifinal. Or even that it defeated Cal two seasons ago in a regular-season ...
