Even a well-heeled antiques collector may buy a reproduction when what she's looking for is particularly hard to find.
That's how Richard Herzog happened to be making not one, but a pair of matching Newport-style Chippendale sofas in ivory silk damask recently for a Cape Cod woman.
His Paoli, Pa., custom shop, Richard Herzog Upholstery, which also does restorations of period furniture, has seen the reproductions side of the business become dominant.
"It's the rarity and cost of the originals," Herzog said, noting that the Cape Cod collector is now considering wing chairs.
