For two decades, the specter of Indiana Jones, the swashbuckling, cinematic adventurer portrayed by Harrison Ford, has hovered over the field of biblical archaeology like a Technicolor hologram.
The three feature films made in the 1980s and 1990s _ but set in the 1930s _ were modeled on Hollywood adventure classics from that earlier period. ``Raiders of the Lost Ark,'' ``Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom'' and ``Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade'' created a lasting cultural phenomenon, indelibly etching Indy's profile onto the profession.
