Apr. 1--It's quiet along Monterey's Cannery Row these days -- too quiet for some merchants.
"It was the second-worst February in 12 years of business," complained Belle James, owners of Village Golf Shop. "There was nobody down here ... This place is dead."
James seems to speak for more than a few merchants. Some six stores among the more than 100 on the row closed late last year because of the recession and the tourist slump following 9/11. Casualties included an art gallery, a pretzel vendor, a deli and a toy store. Another, Bayside Trading Co., is scheduled to close soon.
