Apr. 4--Farmland Foods said Wednesday it wants to build a new meatpacking plant at Albert Lea, not repair its plant that was partially destroyed and badly damaged by fire nine months ago. But building from scratch will need help from insurance companies and state lawmakers.
"From our perspective, everything is still up in the air," said Albert Lea city manager Paul Sparks. "We don't have a role at the state Capitol, and we don't have a seat at the table with the insurance companies.
"But we do want to demolish the mess and get started on new construction," Sparks said.
