Apr. 8--COUPLE CONVICTED IN THEFT FROM CHEESE PLANT: A husband and wife who reside in the Columbia area have been convicted of felony theft in their Kansas hometown for having stolen approximately $76,000 from a cheese plant where they were part owners.
The loss became evident in August 1999; a few months later, the Alma Cheese Plant closed after more than 50 years in business. The plant, about 30 miles east of Manhattan, Kan., had five or six workers. People in Alma, Kan., with a population of about 800, said their town was renowned for its cheese.
