SAN DIEGO -- When interleague play opened last season, the San Diego Padres played host to the Detroit Tigers and suffered an indignity. The series marked the first time these 1984 World Series rivals had met in the regular season, except this was a matchup of big-league dregs rather than anything evocative.
Both teams were bad, and in this series the Padres were worse.
