The year was 1994 and a ponytailed senator knew the perfect candidate to take over the troubled Bureau of Land Management.
Ben Nighthorse Campbell recommended a Coloradan and Democrat for the post, saying water attorney Ken Salazar had "terrific credentials" and would be a "fantastic" director.
A decade later, that same senator - who by now had abandoned the Democrats for the Republicans - unexpectedly called it quits, creating a bizarre political free-for-all in Colorado.
