SALT LAKE CITY _ Of all the events in the Winter Olympics, figure skating is the most magical.
It is the most awe-inspiring, poetic, artistic, breathtaking, emotional, aesthetically pleasing of the 15 events staged during the Winter Games. It is also the most popular.
But for all that figure skating is, there is one thing it is not:
A sport.
This is certain to be an unpopular view. But those who examine figure skating from the perspective of reason rather than emotion must ultimately concede that figure skating has major credibility issues when measured against the standard applied to mainstream sports.
