NEW ORLEANS _ After innumerable rounds of questions in endless press conferences about his brilliance, his genius and the depth of his creativity, here finally was a question that brought some warmth to Mike Martz's large, square face and some vulnerability to his persona.

"How did you get that first job with the Rams and what were you paid?"

Martz smiled, but it wasn't his usual paste-on grin. This one was as genuine as the dues he has paid in climbing from obscurity to reverence.

"My salary was zero," he said with obvious pride. "I kind of begged my way into it."
