MIDWAY, Utah _ The little girls surrounded her, notebooks open, asking politely for Nina Kemppel to write her name.
Kemppel propped the oversized cardboard prize check against a fence, tucked the flowers under her arm and inhaled deeply_so the glittering new gold belt buckle she strapped on wouldn't dig into her stomach. Then she borrowed pens and signed.
All of those rewards, and autographs too. On a sunny afternoon at the Soldier Hollow venue for the 2002 Winter Olympics, you might say the woman who is arguably the nation's best-ever female cross-country skier, stepped out of the shadows.
