Mar. 1--A little math makes it clear why nursing homes in Virginia are struggling to stay afloat.
For every Medicaid patient they accept, homes typically lose $10 to $12 a day, according to industry analysts. The losses add up fast because about 70 percent of their residents rely on Medicaid.
And the math is about to get worse.
Budget proposals by the House and Senate are expected to increase the average loss per Medicaid patient to $30 a day.
"You can't stay in the business with those kinds of reimbursements," said Steve Morrisette, president of the Virginia Health Care Association, which represents ...
