Feb. 23--DEL CITY, Okla.--A thousand days of construction is a good start, but builders have replaced fewer than half of the 500 homes destroyed here by the May 3, 1999, tornado.
Just over 220 homes have been built or are under way, said Judy Gordon, economic development director for the city of 22,128 tucked in an urban shadow just east of downtown Oklahoma City.
The homes are bigger, however, and some lots have been combined.
The average home destroyed was around 1,200 square feet; the average new home is 1,800 square feet, Gordon said.
