Decline in Grain Plantings Adds to Problems in Northern Plains Sugar Beets.

Feb. 12--More rain has meant more problems with fungal diseases in sugar beets in the northern Red River Valley, says Mohamed Khan, an extension sugar beet specialist with North Dakota State University, Fargo, and the University of Minnesota, St. Paul.

"Most of the diseases like wet soils, especially when it is warm," Khan says. "The wet cycle has been good in terms of water for the crops but, at the same time, you have to look at disease problems."
