Feb. 4--There was "no sound scientific basis" for last year's federal decision to withhold irrigation water from more than 1,000 Klamath Basin farms during last summer's severe drought, a national panel of scientists has concluded.
The independent panel of 12 scientists convened by the National Academy of Sciences at the request of Interior Secretary Gale Norton could find no convincing evidence that federally protected fish needed all the water that could have otherwise flowed to farmers in the Klamath Project.
