Health plans are making substantial changes to shift responsibility to consumers for health decisions and encourage physicians to practice in accord with evidence based guidelines, according to a recent study by the Vanderbilt Center for Evidence based Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
The project required 10 months to complete and included input from 89 health plans with 78 million enrollees. In noting a need for plans to transition from "managed utilization" to "evidence based care management," major changes were predicted in five key areas:
