Feb. 19--The state agency responsible for Virginia's college savings plans has expanded its offerings by means of a partnership with American Funds, a major mutual-fund company that sells its funds through stockbrokers.
The Virginia College Savings Plan learned that some brokers had been steering prospective participants away from the state's existing savings plan because the plan's investment choices didn't provide compensation for brokers and financial advisers, said Diana F. Cantor, the agency's executive director.
