NEW YORK -- Caught in the lull between the summer and school days with little in the way of clearance stock, apparel retailers carried their late-June summer doldrums into July. The result was a month of comparable-store sales results that ranged from unimpressive to genuinely disappointing.
Although luxury merchants and several teen retailers, most notably Aeropostale and American Eagle Outfitters (up 13.8 percent and 20.2 percent, respectively), beat the summer non-heat, most retailers came in with results that fell short of their own budgets and analysts' expectations.
