Jan. 3--The Western New York manufacturing economy took a sharp turn for the worse during December, with steep declines in production and new orders pushing a local purchasing managers index to its lowest level in at least five years.

The group's index, one of the earliest measures of manufacturing activity during the previous month, dropped to its lowest level since the National Association of Purchasing Management -- Buffalo began compiling the index in 1997.
