Jan. 9--SOMERSET SHOEMAKER CLOSES: The Bender Shoe Co., a shoemaker that has operated in Somerset County since 1948, has shut down manufacturing and permanently laid off 135 of its 140 employees. Bender, a unit of the B.B. Walker Co. of Asheboro, N.C., dismissed the employees Friday. Plant manager Ross Auman said the factory, which made men's work shoes, cowboy boots and outdoor footwear, was hurt by inexpensive imports. He said he was awaiting word from corporate headquarters in North Carolina about the plant's future. Walker executives declined to comment. Bender was sold to Walker in 1965.
