Jan. 13--Lucas County lenders know there is one word that explains why their number and amount of loans last year jumped dramatically from the year before: refinancing.

Interest rates that dropped to lows of 6.5 percent on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage and below 6 percent for a 15-year mortgage spurred homeowners in droves to refinance.

Lenders processed nearly 7,200 more loans in 2001 than in the prior year.

Some lenders had huge increases in dollars lent last year, although the overall total for the county was off slightly at $13.5 billion.
